Product Description
Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game in which you have to use your shovel to dig your way through the earth. Stopping you from doing this are two monsters, called Pooka and Fygar, who will continually chase you around. The only weapon that you carry is an air pump, which you can use to inflate the monsters to the point where they explode. (if you start to inflate them but stop doing so, the monsters will get turned back to their normal selves.) Furthermore, rocks are scattered throughout the earth, and you can use these rocks to squash them. If the monsters do not find you for several seconds, they will eventually get turned into ghosts, which are able to walk through the earth. They are invincible and cannot be killed. From time to time, vegetables will appear in the center, and you can get these for points.

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars An excellent port for the 7800   May 20, 2010
JamMasterN (Revere, MA United States)
Dig Dug for the Atari 7800 is, without question, one of the best arcade ports for the system. It has excellent graphics, including Dig Dug himself, the enemies you fight(ie: the Pookas and Fygars), the boulders you can use to crush the enemies, even the dirt you dig through. The sound effects are sharp and pleasing, almost perfectly replicating the original arcade feeling, and the music is just as good. And, as always, Dig Dug's gameplay is so simple and enjoyable that it's practically addictive. This game is one of the great, enduring classics of the 80s, and the 7800-version lives up to that legacy magnificently. If you own this system, then you should either already have this game, or you should be buying it right now. It is *that* good.

2 out of 5 stars Dig-Dug, Atari 7800   May 17, 2010

Blowing up dragons with a bicycle pump? Sign me up Bob! But leave this 7800 stinker in the discount bin. With minimal graphic presentation, VCS sound effects, and bad controls; this is one translation of Dig-Dug that is best forgotten. The arcade classic needs no introduction, but allow someone to further torture you. Gameplay involves your character: the astronautical pumpman. With a handy bikepump, your job is to clear each groundzone of evil dragons and stalking goggleboys. Sounds simple enough, but courage must be ready at will. And, with the addition of boulders at your disposal, there is more than one way to defeat critter minions. While aiming for a high-score is a priority, and full-grown vegetables give bonuses, progress through each stage is of most importance. Did I place in an extra conjuction? Beg pardon, but while the idea of an Atari 7800 translation sounds promising, the sum makes less of its parts. The eye candy tastes awful: the color visuals limit the environment to extreme low. Ugly veggie crops and cycloptic dragons do not help, and neither do the sound effects. Listen to 'em for five minutes: they are the same as those in Atari 2600 Dig-Dug! It is as if they recycled the same [explicitive] over and over. Oh, and do NOT get me hyper over the joystick controls. You have to be precise (and I mean REAL precise) on where you want your freakin' character to move. And with my 8-way Pro-Line joystick, it is very hard not to take notice. Sega Genesis controller? Oh no, no quality controller from Sega will fix this! In addition, whenever you attempt to detonate a minion, it takes FOUR WHOLE SECONDS to blow them up! A huge control hamper, especially when encountered by two minions in a corner. Thank goodness for the precious continue option, or else I would have NEVER made it to the ninth stage! Let us be fair, it is still worth it to play this cartridge for the Dig-Dug name alone. Nonetheless, with poor technology and staggered gameplay, this arcade conversion has little to offer.
